Make sure frame is plumb

Check the Frame for Plumb and Level

View Steps

Step 1: Use a 72” level to confirm that the frame and stop are plumb.

Start on either side.

Then check the hinge stop.

And then repeat on the opposite side.

Step 2: Switch to a shorter level to make sure the head of the frame is perfectly level.

Installing Hinge Housing

Removing the Hinge Housing and Hinge Block

View Steps

Step 3: Using a 5-in-1 tool, remove the hinge block from the hinge housing.

Avoid using a screwdriver so you don’t deform the hinge block.

Step 4: Take out the hinge housing from the door.

  • Pro tip

Using a screwdriver for this task can damage the hinge block. A 5-in-1 tool prevents this from happening.

Installing the Spacer on Hinge Housing and Hinge Housing

View Steps

Step 5: Install the head stop spacer onto the hinge housing, positioning it opposite the hanger rod cutout.

Step 6: Place the hinge housing into position. Use the spacer as a guide off the head stop of the frame.

Step 7: Use the thickness of your key to align the hinge housing with the head of the frame.

Step 8: Secure a screw into the center of the top slot on the hinge housing.

Step 9: Grab your 72” level again to make sure the hinge housing is plumb.

Step 10: Place a screw in the center of the bottom slot on the hinge housing.

Step 11: Fasten the middle screw on the hinge housing.

Double-check the hinge is plumb with your level.

Installing the Hanger Rod

View Steps

Step 12: Hook the hanger rod into the cutout at the top of the hinge housing.

Step 13: Position the door in front of the frame, keeping the hinge side near the frame jamb.

Step 14: Tilt the door and hook the other end of the hanger rod into the door’s cutout.

Lower the door gently until it’s supported by the hanger rod.

Step 15: With the door hanging on the rod, lift the door slightly by the latch side.

Don’t pull the door more than 6” out of the opening and guide the hinge into the hinge housing.

Step 16: Hold the door steady and move around to the push side.

Step 17: Push the door almost closed. Press lightly with your foot at the bottom hinge to ensure it’s fully engaged—be careful not to damage the door’s finish. Then slowly open the door to seat the hinge housing.

Step 18: Install temporary hinge blocks at both the top and bottom of the hinge housing.

Check Tolerances Per Leaf

View Steps

Step 19: If the locking channel is not already in the latched position, depress the retainer and rotate the locking channel by hand until it latches.

Step 20: Close the door and use your key to check the retainer’s tolerance.

The key’s thickness is your “go” — while ¼” would be a “no go”.

Step 21: Repeat Steps 3 to 20 to hang the second door.

Checking for Plane

View Steps

Step 22: To ensure the doors are in plane, set the locking channel in the latched position and let it rest against the other door.

Check that the contact is even along the entire length of the locking channel.

If there’s a gap at the top or bottom, adjust the hinge as needed to align the doors.

Step 23: With both doors with the locking channel in the unlatched position, carefully close them together. Confirm each locking channel lines up correctly.

Check Tolerances on Both Leafs

View Steps

Step 24: Use the key to double-check the tolerance between the locking channels at the retainer for both doors.

(Remember, the key thickness is your “go”, and ¼” is a “no go.)

Step 25: Use the key to check the spacing along the length of the two doors.

5/32” is a “go” and 7/16” is a “no go”.

Installing the Head Strike

View Steps

Step 26: Find the center of the doors: Mark the edges of both doors on the face of the frame.

Use a tape measure to locate and mark the midpoint between those lines.

Step 27: Open both doors by engaging the mechanisms to access where the head strike will be installed.

Step 28: Identify the center line and the fin on the head strike.

Align the center line with the mark you made in the previous step.

The fin side goes against the head stop.

Step 29: Peel off the backing on the temporary tape and install the head strike, matching the notch to your center line.

Step 30: Secure the head strike with one screw.

Step 31: Close both doors to ensure they latch with minimal force.

Step 32: Open and close each door. (They should operate independently without interfering with the head strike.)

Step 33: Fasten the remaining three head strike screws.

Installing the Hinge Housing Screws and Hinge Block

View Steps

Step 34: Fasten the remaining hinge housing screws, beginning with the top round hole. You should have at least 15 screws in total per hinge housing.

Step 35: Take your 5-in-1 tool to remove the top temporary hinge block.

Step 36: Insert the top of the full-height hinge block into the hinge housing and tap it gently with a mallet to snap it into place.

Step 37: Use the same 5-in-1 tool to remove the bottom temporary hinge block.

Step 38: Insert the rest of the full hinge block into the hinge housing, and use the rubber mallet to secure it.

Step 39: Repeat the previous steps to secure the remaining screws on the second hinge housing and install the full hinge block.
